Lost and Found 11: Distant Cousins

Hi friends, today one of those surprises that pop music gives you from time to time.
I never liked the Distant Cousins a lot, first time I heard of them journalists put them into the Madchester scene, but they had never been part of that music and style. They made a kind of blue eyed soul not very interesting in my opinion.

But in their first and best 12" from 1989, "You used to", you can find this perfect piece of guitar pop in the b-side. I still cannot believe it.

They were: Doreen Edwards (vocals), Neil Fitzpatrick (guitars) and Snuff (drums and percussion).

Please, enjoy this "reason-to-hear-all-the-bsides-of-your-record-collection".

Have a nice week.

wow... I am amazed to find a Distant Cousins mp3. Rare Groove Indeed!

Have you got You Used To Smile? Brilliant song. Havent heard since I was 17, c 1990. Soulful. Lush. Rich vocals. How on earth wasnt that a hit? Or for that matter the artist, Harriet with Temple Of Love, the same year.

Fabulosa canción. Muy ochentera, pero en el mejor sentido. Parece una pieza olvidada de los mejores Railway Children

Blue eyed soul? Doreen Edwards? Do you think she's got blue eyes? Concrete Boxes is a great track though.

In response to Alice:

You're right, You Used To should have been a monster smash. It was a Radio 1 single of the week, got some pretty powerful playlistings, the band were touring with Simply Red when it was in the chart (peak 77, how dim is that), and the video (made by Graham Proudlove - made Simple Minds movie) was excellent low budget fare and popular with the veejays and vid shows generally.

The record company could have spent just a little bit more on marketing.

I'll see what I can get posted up over the next 12 months. I was their manager during this period of near success. They had a real radio hit or ear wurm with the tune also in Germany where Intercord were their label.

They played a full concert on TV there and countless live and play back perfs there in Holland (where they also toured) and Spain.

In Spain they were on the local TOTP in Madrid as well as playing live from the studio as the half time entertainment at a Handball Cup Final or something like that!

In the USA they were in Newsweek as the non-Madchester element of Manchester's success at the time.

Sobre mí

Hi, I'm Javier. This site is a tribute to the golden years of indie pop (C86, guitar pop, jangle pop, etc). I will post a song weekly from my vinyls, always very rare songs, hard to find nowadays (except if you are millionaire and want to spend your money in ebay). Hope you like it, please send your comments to : sansonero@yahoo.es
